Writer’s Guidelines

Thanks for your interest in writing for California Job Journal and JobJournal.com. If you are familiar with our publication’s format, you already know that we feature timely, informative articles for jobseekers, currently employed workers, career changers, managers and employers. Those articles, combined with job-market updates, search tips and comprehensive job listings, provide a powerful informational resource for our readers.

General Interest Articles
We encourage freelance writers to suggest and write on employment subjects of interest to them. General-interest articles may address such topics as conducting a successful job search, identifying transferable skills, coping with job-search or work-related stress, writing an effective resume, etc. Some of the topics we’d like to cover more are: older workers and jobseekers over 50; alternatives to conventional employment; exceptional online resources; transferring from the military to the private sector; options for entry-level professionals; job restructuring; emerging job market trends; application follow-up; cover letters; and diversity in the workplace. First-person experiences that provide insights of value to many readers are especially welcome. Of course, these are just a few possibilities.

Career Profiles
In addition to these general-interest articles, we welcome articles from professionals willing to share their own job expertise. CJJ provides a valuable service in educating our readers about promising industries and specific career choices, such as teaching, engineering, healthcare and information technology. While there is some flexibility in the focus of these “industry-informationals,” they should discuss current industry trends and job outlook, along with the basics of the career.

Pay & Deadlines
Most articles run 700 to 1200 words in length, and payment for assigned pieces is determined on a per project basis. Payment is made upon articles final approval for publication. In lieu of payment, writers may develop a biographical tagline to promote their own services, employment availability, or freelance work. Free advertising is another payment option. All material is expected by the deadlines agreed upon. Payment for material submitted after deadline will drop by 10 percent per day. Material submitted more than seven days after deadline will not be accepted at all. Unsolicited articles, which can address just about any employment-related topic, are always welcome and may be submitted anytime.

In return for your contribution to this vital employment resource, you will also be rewarded with the prominent exposure your name will receive throughout Northern California. Current monthly readership is approximately 200,000 with distribution in most major cities including Sacramento, Stockton, Modesto, Oakland, San Francisco, and the entire Bay Area, and in hundreds of California colleges and universities, major employment centers, and military outplacement centers. Your articles will be read by many professionals, including career counselors, human resources specialists, and industry managers. Writing for California Job Journal is a great way to promote your own career, whether or not you are currently employed!
